Stroll through the alleyways of the traditional villages of Douliana, Gavalochori and Vamos and let our guide tell you about their history. Mingle with the locals - and don't forget to take your camera. Hike from Douliana through the woods down to Gavalochori. This trail has been used for centuries by the local people; it is well maintained and mostly runs downhill, through greenery dense enough to keep out the summer heat. We can make a short interim stop to look at an interesting little chapel built at the entrance to a cave. The hike takes a total of 35-45 minutes. The Folk Museum at Gavalochori will be open and waiting to give us a first hand impression of the history of the area – with everything from muskets to wedding dresses! Marvel at the specialists of the Glass Factory who blow the recycled glass and create artistic works -lamps, ash trays, vases, plates and more. It is hot in there because of the ovens, but well worth the visit. Hundreds of pieces are on sale at the adjacent store. Eat the dishes that compose what is known as the healthiest diet in the world. The Mediterranean, and particularly Cretan diet, is not only the most balanced, but also full of delicious, colourfull, inventive and succulent dishes. Watch the cook prepare the tzatziki you'll be eating - right in front of your eyes! We recommend a swim (optional and subject to the group's wishes) in the clear waters of the Apokoronas region. Surely the best way to beat the heat and cool down for the rest of the trip! The wells of the Gavaladon (the Gavalas was a family of noblemen of the Byzantine era; the village of Gavalohori being their fiefdom, it bore their name) show us how the locals collected and stored their most valuable resource- water. The Olive Oil Press is quiet during the summer months after a long season of olive oil production. This is a perfect time for us to see how it is done, and even dip some bread in a fresh sample! You can purchase products made by the ‘Fabrica’, such as (of course!) olive oil, wine and tsikoudia. TRIP DETAILS Price Includes:
